Yes, I know it is Wednesday – so I’m a day late – UNFORGIVABLE (YouTube reference). Anyways, I’ve been out for the count with a mean case of Strep but that didn’t stop me from sipping on a craft beer last night. I figured the alcohol would kill the bacteria that’s been making my life a living hell…right?
So here it is…Smuggler’s Hazelnut Stout from Hideout Brewing Company.
Taking my ailment into consideration, I have to admit my pallet probably wasn’t at its best. This beer was just OK in my opinion. It poured black with a REALLY thin tan head. It had a moderate roasted coffee, chocolate and nutty aroma. I expected it to be a bit thicker and creamier than what it was. The beer was very sweet in my opinion and finished with more bitter notes. I could probably only put back one or two before having to move on to something lighter. The Hideout Brewing Co. offers this brew as both a CO2 and Nitro. I would be interested in trying the nitro version because some of my negatives might then be mute.
If you’ve never been to the Hideout Brewing Company I highly suggest it. Though I wasn’t there yesterday, I have been there in the past. It’s off the beaten path, located at the end of a winding road. They have some 30 brews on tap. With a selection like that you’d assume this place is huge but it’s quite the contrary. It probably only has six tables and a J-shaped bar in the main area which makes for a truly unique experience. Some of the regulars even go behind the bar and fill their mugs up themselves. I could get used to that.
The Hideout is located at 3113 Plaza Dr NE, GR, MI 49525 – so support local and go check it out!
